In the land of green

Vacation is over; back to work, back to the routines now. Running in the humid heat in the morning hours - is New York turning into a rain forest?? - spending Saturday afternoon blasting my music in the nearly empty lab - new album by Phoenix just out and I like this song, not just because of the title (and HSS blocked YouTube, very upsetting, had to find a new video player) and I have tickets to their September show in Central Park :)

All right, all right, I know you're just soo excited to hear about my trip! Well, even if you're not, here it is. Loved almost everything about Dublin and Edinburgh! Both cities are small, easily walkable (we only took buses a couple of times when we were too tired to walk anymore) which is such a nice change after New York. People were so nice and friendly - not in a sketchy way in which sometimes New Yorkers are friendly - as soon as we exited the airport terminal in Dublin, there was a guy from the bus company directing us towards the station we had to wait at, and after getting our umbrellas out of our suitcases, we were on our way. The weather looked very "Irish" and sad; we didn't know that was gonna be the only time we had to open our umbrellas though :)

We stayed in a 1 bedroom apartment with 2 other friends who were meeting us there later that day. We settled in and while we chatted over a cup of tea, the rain stopped and the sun came out. As soon as everyone had arrived, we set out to find food. Soon I realized that almost everything the Irish eat has something to do with Guinness. My absolute favorite meal was the slow-cooked beef stew in Guinness sauce with Guinness brown bread and a pint of Guinness.

Our stay in Dublin obviously involved a lot of drinking: not only Guinness, but all kinds of other things too. The most interesting of all that was probably the random ice-cream tasting we happened to attend. We noticed a sign for free ice-cream samples on the street, directing us towards a shopping center that we would normally not even think to enter. It turned out that a new ice-cream shop was opening that day and they were throwing a party. We could taste all the different flavors: Guinness, of course, Bailey's, algae (not my favorite), are just some I can remember now. Soon, ice-cream floats started arriving in shot glasses, filled with different liquors and eventually glasses of wine were passed around and often refilled. There was a band playing Irish folk music and children dancing, it was a party!

We wondered around Trinity College a bit too - mostly due to my interest in checking out all universities in Europe where I could one day potentially go - and happened to go into the science building where not only did I see a famous Immunologist I recognized from seeing him speak at a conference before but they also had a science-themed coffee-shop and so I HAD TO get a cup of coffee with "SCIENCE" written on it :) It's also a wonderful campus with a huge field in the middle of it where people were running and playing all kinds of games.

The Street Performer World Championships also happened to be in Dublin during this time. Although I thought that watching people juggle and catch catapulted cabbages on their heads with spiked-helmets was a bit much, there was one guy from Denmark who did some pretty amazing stuff with a big green balloon.

Ah, lovely city! I'll be back for sure. For some Irish coffee from Insomnia coffee-shop, Guinness, beef-stew, the green grass, double-decker buses, Irish accents, to find a 4-leaved clover and see more Leprechauns and rainbows.
