The central question in this new play, "Impressionism", was whether life is more more like realism or impressionism. The conclusion: impressionism since you have to take a few steps back in order to see things clearly. A water lily might seem like a spot on a canvas if you stand too close to the painting, but when you look at it from farther away, all of a sudden, the whole ocean of lilies becomes clear and beautiful. Similarly, in life, if we stand too close, if we look at all the details, we might miss the big picture and might forget to appreciate the things that make it so beautiful. If we become too wound up in the little details and stresses that we face day in and day out, we might just miss the whole ride and realize too late that our lives are speeding by while we are too busy to step back and look from a different point of view.
I really liked the play although I don't think it got good reviews - the theater was only about half full even though the cast was world famous. It made me laugh and brought tears to my eyes. I still love Jeremy Irons, especially his accent and deep voice.
